Nexus #99
I finally decided to bite the bullet and do it! I had talked here before about how much I used to love the comic book Nexus, by Mike Baron & Steve Rude. Well I managed to miss the Free Comic book day issue, but wasn’t about to miss the regular series as it restarted after 10 long years!
So I found a comic book store in PHX that’s near where my parents live, and ordered from them. I got my order the very next day! You can’t do any better than that! So I am hereby making Atomic Comics the official comic book shop of the Marshian Chronicles! Check them out – I plan on visiting one of their stores next time I’m in PHX.
Nexus #99 is called, Space Opera, Act One. Since Rude is self publishing this he’s decided (for now at least) to do it in separate four parters. He’s also going to be publishing some of his other characters independently as well.
Reading this issue was simply amazing! I could hardly believe it had been over 10 years since I had read Nexus! The art looked exactly the same! The story had the same lighthearted tension that I remember from the old series.
It seemed to pick up without missing a beat! I wondered how they would manage this. How do you summarize nearly 100 issues of story to help new readers catch on? How do you pick up after so long without seeming rusty? Well they did it! A super brief one page summary of what you need to know, then Wham! you are into the story and running full speed ahead.
It’s quite an accomplishment – my hat’s off to Baron and Rude on this one!
On top of all that, they have a letter’s page – several pages long letter’s page at that! Way to cool!
You ought to pick this one up, not just to support indy artists, but to give yourself a heaping helping of enjoyment and fun! Oh yes, if you don’t know where to find it, I’d highly recommend Atomic Comics!
