Short Rounds #131

I’ve got some amazing (not necessarily good but amazing) stories and links this week. Check them out and have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!

Most Heartbreaking Story of the Week

A Child of Rubbish – read this story of a 12 year old in Yangon, Myanmar, who sorts through trash to support the family that can’t house him, so he lives on the streets and dreams of being rich.  If this doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, you may be hard hearted.

Most Heartbreaking Video of the Week

The Ugly War – Afghanistan - This is a sobering reminder of just what our men and women go through every day while serving in the War Against Terror.

Most Important – and Frightening – Story of the Week

Court Orders Christian Child to Get Secular Education - this story is unreal and very, very frightening. If the courts can do this (it’s on appeal of course) they can do anything and our liberty is just about gone!

Other News Stories Of Interest

Bye, Bye TNIV – Hello Updated NIV! It’s about time on the first one, and let’s be careful on the second one!

Anniversary of World War Two In Europe - They may be at peace, but that doesn’t mean they like each other!

Child of rubbish story was incredible – I love his attitude of how he could find something precious in the trash one day. I heard a man tell me once that’s how he met his wife. :) I guess he felt he found something precious as well.

Too bad the afghan video isn’t available anymore, I’d like to see it.

But the real reason I’m commenting is because of the “offensive ad”… I went, I watched the video – and I’m sorry to say I haven’t figured out why people are offended by it? We’re not offended by movies that show the attack of Pearl Harbor, or movies that show the slaughter of missionaries – why are we offended to see a video reenactment of 911?

It was ordered that footage of it not be showed on newscasts because it made us angry seeing the video footage of it. I’m wondering if we are just so protected emotionally, that we don’t understand many emotions beyond happy, sad, and offended.

I thought the video made a good point – we grieve for our own issues our men and women that were tragically lost that day in 2001. As a flight attendant for American Airlines I especially felt the sting of the fact that I recognized the face of one of the pilots because I had flown with him once. It rocks me to my core that I, little me in my little world, knew one of the fallen that day.

But the tsunami did indeed take many more lives. And that’s all they were trying to make a point of with the video I felt. The majority of Americans would NEVER intentionally make light of the events of that day. I think we may truly just too easily offended.

At the risk of this being extremely too long I just want to add one more thiing.
I struggle with watching re-enactments of Jesus’ crucifixion. I conceed the value in it (I will never be the same after watching “The Passion of the Christ”), but at the same time there is something so precious, so valuable, so intensely IMPORTANT about it that if you must do it you MUST take the fact that you have done it seriously. I don’t want the Jesus character laughing and joking with people about his part played on the cross – things like that. It must be done soberly and with the utmost of respect.

I think the same applies to most re-enactments of a serious or especially painful nature for people such as the 911 event.

Thanks for this post though and for letting me voice my opinions. I like your short rounds on Fridays – keep ‘em up!

Oh, that the Church worldwide would reach out not only to this child, but to as many as possible!
