Creating The Future
I’ve been doing a lot of planning lately for what we’ll be doing here at KCC in 2010. This post isn’t about what we’re planning, but for all you KCC’ers out there I’ll give you a hint: Old & new, coming & going & lots of reading for you! I think God is going to do great things here in 2010 and I’m getting excited about them!
‘Nuff said!
When you sit down to plan what you’ll be doing in the future a lot of things pass through your mind, often in the form of questions. What do I want to do? What do I need to do? What’s possible? What’s impossible? How will people react to this? What would be good us to do? Can I afford it? Do I have time for this? Could we do this better? Should we stop doing this so we can do that?
The questions never really end, they just go on and on and on. Those questions make planning for the future both a lot of fun and a pain in the rear at the same time! But you’ve got to ask them if you want to be wise and responsible. More than that, you’ve got to investigate them, and then make a choice about what’s actually possible and desirable to do.
No one knows what the future holds. Not one of us knows what will happen in the next 5 minutes, much less the next 12 months. And almost all of what will happen to you in the next year will be completely or largely out of your control. The economy, health care, the weather, terror attacks, bad drivers, etc. All out of our control.
So why plan? Why not just wait and see what happens, and then roll with the punches?
There’s a lot of possible answers to that question, but here’s one you might not have thought about. One reason to plan ahead is that in a very real sense, when I make plans and begin to prepare to do them, I’m actually creating the future.
Really! I know that sounds odd, but think about it. You probably won’t be able to do some of what you plan for next year, but odds are you’ll do some of it. Therefore by planning and preparing now for something in the future, you are taking a hand in creating exactly that future!
Which is, I believe, exactly what God wants us to do. To plan and prepare boldly and prayerfully to live by faith this next year, so that in everything Jesus will be glorified!
So, where does God want you to today? Tomorrow? In six months?
Something to think about.
