Mel Gibson, Naveed Haq, Hezbollah & The Cult of Celebrity Worship

I was watching the end of Bill O’Reilly’s show tonight and thought one of the letters said it well, “Mel Gibson? Who cares?”

It reminded me of what I’ve been thinking and also what I had read on Michelle Malkin’s site. Why on earth are we fixated on Mr. Gibson’s sad and offensive and drunken tirade against Jews when Naveed Haq killed one Jewish person and wounded several others just a few scant days ago?

My answer is simple: Mel Gibson is a huge celebrity, Mr. Haq is not. Odds are that we would have never heard of Naveeh Haq if he hadn’t committed this or some other act of terror (and make no mistake, that’s what it was!).

Mel Gibson on the other hand is a house hold name. From the Passion of the Christ, to all his other movies, he’s been known and loved for years.

He’s a celebrity – therefore he’s important! He’s a celebrity – and what he does is more important than what an unknown person does! He’s a celebrity – and even more a fallen celebrity – just the kind of person we love to hate or hate to love, or something!

He’s a celebritythe object of modern American obsession and worship.

So we forget about Hezbollah, violent anti-semites who actually kill men, women and children for simply being Jews. And we forget about Haq, who murdered one Jewish person and tried to kill more.

Yes we forget all about them, to obsess and talk endlessly about Mel Gibson, whose only said bad things about Jews, and only then when he was drunk!

What’s worse, being a drunk spouting horrible anti-Jewish hate speech, or spouting anti-Jewish hate speech while you are killing Jews with rockets or bullets?

You wouldn’t think this would be all that hard to figure out would you?

But in modern America, where we’ve forsaken God and His Word to worship all things popular, apparently it is.

Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools Romans 1:22 (NIV)

That’s what happens when you join the Cult of Celebrity Worship.
